Why do we have different reactions to confined spaces?

Claustrophobia varies due to: genetics, amygdala reactivity, previous traumatic experiences (trapped, suffocated), perceived inability to escape, and interpretation of physiological responses (racing heart = danger vs. normal anxiety). Severity ranges from mild discomfort to panic attacks.
