Q
Why do we have different senses of smell?
A
Expert Answer
Olfactory sensitivity varies enormously due to: genetic differences (OR gene variants—some people can't smell certain compounds), receptor density, exposure history, age (declines after 60), and hormonal state. Pregnancy often increases smell sensitivity. About 1% of people can't smell at all (anosmia).
