What is a supernova?

A supernova is a massive stellar explosion. Type II occurs when massive stars run out of fuel and collapse; Type Ia when white dwarfs accrete enough matter to reignite. A single supernova can briefly outshine its entire galaxy and create heavy elements that seed future star and planet formation.
