What is the Great Filter?

A proposed solution to the Fermi Paradox: some step in the evolution from non-living matter to interstellar civilization is extremely improbable. The filter could be behind us (abiogenesis or intelligence is rare) or ahead of us (technological civilizations usually self-destruct).
