Why are people influenced by authority figures?

Milgram's experiments showed ordinary people will obey authority to harm others. We defer to experts because: evolutionary advantage (group hierarchies promote coordination), socialization to respect authority, perceived competence, and diffusion of responsibility ('I'm just following orders'). Awareness helps resist inappropriate influence.
