How do salmon survive jumping up waterfalls?

Salmon can leap up to 3 meters using powerful tail thrusts and swimming at speeds up to 8 meters per second. They time jumps with water flow, using the current to boost their trajectory. Only about 5% of the journey involves leaping; most is steady upstream swimming.
