Why do dogs have wet noses?

A

Expert Answer

A thin layer of mucus helps absorb scent chemicals. Licking the nose transfers these chemicals to olfactory glands on the roof of the mouth (Jacobson's organ). Wet noses also help regulate body temperature through evaporation. A dry nose isn't necessarily a sign of illness.
