Why do dogs tilt their heads?

Possibly to better locate sound sources (adjusting ear position), to see past their muzzle's visual obstruction, or as a social signal showing engagement. Some research suggests it's more common in social breeds and when hearing familiar words, suggesting social-communicative function.
