Why do male seahorses carry the babies?

Seahorse reproduction is unique: females deposit eggs in the male's brood pouch, where he fertilizes and carries them. This may allow females to produce more eggs while males gestate. It's one of the few examples of male pregnancy in the animal kingdom.
