Q
Why do giraffes have long necks?
A
Expert Answer
Traditional explanation: reaching high foliage. But they also use necks in combat ('necking' between males), and females prefer males with longer necks. Multiple selection pressures likely contributed. Interestingly, giraffes and okapis (short-necked) diverged relatively recently, suggesting rapid neck elongation.
