Why do fireflies glow?

Bioluminescence serves as mating signals—each species has unique flash patterns. Males typically fly and flash; females respond from perches. The light is produced by a chemical reaction (luciferin + luciferase + oxygen) that's remarkably efficient, producing light with almost no heat.
