Do plants feel pain?

Plants lack nervous systems and brains to feel pain as animals do. However, they respond to damage by releasing chemical signals (similar to hormones) and can communicate distress to nearby plants. Whether this constitutes 'feeling' in any meaningful sense is debated but generally considered unlikely.
