Why do octopuses have three hearts?

Two branchial hearts pump blood through the gills, while one systemic heart circulates blood to the body. The systemic heart actually stops beating when octopuses swim, which is why they prefer crawling—they tire quickly from swimming. Their blue blood uses copper (hemocyanin) rather than iron to transport oxygen.
