Why do whales beach themselves?

Multiple factors may contribute: sonar interference disrupting navigation, illness, injury, social following (one stranded whale leads others), extreme weather, or magnetic anomalies. Different species strand for different reasons. Human activities appear to contribute but don't explain all strandings.
