If you can't have your cake and eat it too, why do bakeries exist?

The original phrasing was 'you can't eat your cake and have it too'—once eaten, it's gone. Bakeries let you buy cake repeatedly. The proverb means you can't simultaneously possess and consume a single resource; it doesn't mean you can't ever have cake.
