If it's the thought that counts, why do we still give gifts?

Thoughts matter, but tangible gifts symbolize those thoughts. The gift makes the thought concrete and memorable. We give gifts because symbolic actions communicate care more effectively than unexpressed feelings. Both thought and expression matter.
