If laughter is the best medicine, why do we say 'I died laughing'?

'I died laughing' is hyperbole, not literal death. No one has actually died from laughter (though extreme emotional states can trigger underlying conditions). The juxtaposition of 'best medicine' and 'died' is ironic humor, not a genuine contradiction.
