If I try to fail and succeed, did I fail or succeed?

You succeeded at failing. The paradox dissolves when we specify what you succeeded or failed at: you succeeded in the attempt to fail, and you failed at whatever task you were attempting. Success and failure are relative to goals, not absolute states.
