If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we know?

We wouldn't immediately, but dictionaries are based on actual usage. If a 'misspelling' became widely used, it would eventually become the correct spelling through descriptivist lexicography. Dictionaries document usage, not prescribe it (though some do both).
