Why do we say 'once in a blue moon'?

A 'blue moon' is the second full moon in a calendar month, occurring every 2-3 years. 'Blue' may come from the Old English word 'belewe' (betrayer). The phrase means a rare event. Actual visually blue moons can occur from volcanic ash or smoke.
