How do I clean a cast iron skillet?

Clean while still warm using hot water and a brush or scraper. Avoid soap (it strips seasoning) unless heavily soiled—modern mild soaps are actually okay. Dry thoroughly immediately to prevent rust. Apply thin layer of oil after cleaning. Never soak or put in dishwasher.
