Why do clothes shrink in the dryer?

Heat and mechanical action cause fibers to contract and interlock more tightly. Natural fibers (wool, cotton) shrink more than synthetics. Wool felts due to scale structure; cotton relaxes twisted fibers. Following care labels, air drying, and using low heat minimize shrinkage.
