Why does food taste bland when you have a cold?

Most 'taste' is actually smell. Nasal congestion blocks aroma molecules from reaching olfactory receptors. Taste buds (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami) still function, but without aroma, flavors become muted and indistinct. Texture and temperature become more noticeable.
