Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable?

Botanically, tomatoes are fruits (they contain seeds and develop from the ovary of a flower). Culinary-wise, they're treated as vegetables (savory applications). The U.S. Supreme Court ruled them vegetables for tariff purposes in 1893. Both classifications are valid in different contexts.
