Why do we get earwax?

Earwax (cerumen) protects the ear canal by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms. It also lubricates the canal. The ears are generally self-cleaning—earwax moves outward naturally. Cotton swabs often push wax deeper and are not recommended.
