Are numbers real or invented?

Platonists believe numbers exist independently of humans in an abstract realm. Formalists view them as useful human inventions. Interestingly, mathematics describes reality remarkably well, suggesting either deep connections between mind and universe or that we've evolved to see mathematical patterns.
